The week that was: A weekly wrap-up of CCSD athletics
Football – CCSD clubs go 2-4 in week 4
Cherry Creek School District football teams faced tough competition during week 4 of the 2021 season. On Sept. 16, Eaglecrest had a 10-7 lead over visiting Fossil Ridge at the halftime break, but the Sabercats scored 13 points in the 4th quarter to get the 27-23 win, to drop the Raptors to 1-3. Up next, Eaglecrest travels to Mullen on Sept. 24.
On Sept. 17, three district clubs were in action. Grandview hosted Ralston Valley at Legacy Stadium. The Wolves were shut out in the first half, and 13 second-half points were too little, too late, as the Mustangs prevailed 24-13, handing Grandview its first loss of the season. Up next, the 3-1 Wolves host Horizon for Homecoming at Legacy Stadium on Sept. 24.
Smoky Hill ran into a buzz saw in Regis Jesuit at the Stutler Bowl. The Raiders scored 42 unanswered points in the first half, going on to beat the Buffaloes 42-7. Smoky managed one offensive touchdown in the third quarter to close out the evening’s scoring. Up next, the 2-2 Buffs host Pomona for Homecoming on Sept. 24 at the Stutler Bowl.
The district got its first win of the weekend when the Cherry Creek Bruins beat Arvada West 52-21 at the North Area Athletic Complex. The Wildcats were in the game at halftime trailing Creek 17-7. But in the third quarter the Bruins put together a punt return for a touchdown, and a blocked punt for another, all in the space of two minutes to break the game open on the way to the victory. 3-1 Cherry Creek faces the 3-1 Regis Jesuit Raiders on Sept. 24 at Regis.
Finally, on Sept. 18, Cherokee Trail and Overland played in the CCSD Veterans & Military Appreciation game at Legacy Stadium. Honorary military captains for the coin flip, a vintage airplane flyover and an outpouring of support for the men and women in uniform – past and present – made for a great evening. The Cougars defeated the Overland 35-8 with great defensive play and the offense capitalizing on Trailblazer turnovers. Up next, 3-1 CT will play Denver East on Sept. 25 at All-City Stadium. At 0-4, the Trailblazers will try and get their first win Sept. 24 against Wheat Ridge at Jeffco Stadium.
Boys Golf – District teams getting ready for regionals
CCSD boys golf teams participated in the final Centennial League event of the season on Sept. 13. League Match No. 5 was played at Littleton Golf and Tennis Club, with Arapahoe taking top team honors with a final score of 253. Cherry Creek came in second with 266, Grandview third at 275, followed by Mullen (277), Cherokee Trail (296) and Eaglecrest (325). Starting Sept. 20, district golf clubs will play in state regional events at four venues in the metro area, ending on Sept. 23. Players and teams will be vying for position at the 5A State Golf Championships, which will be held Oct. 4-5 at the Colorado Springs Country Club.
Gymnastics – Overland’s Mattea Dolan paces the Trailblazers
The Overland gymnastics team hosted Rock Canyon on Sept. 15, and the Trailblazers bested the Jaguars by the team score of 172.325 to 152.000. Junior and defending state individual champion Mattea Dolan (Grandview) took first All-Around, and took top honors in vault, balance beam and floor exercise. Overland’s sophomore Kyla Burke (Grandview) took first on the uneven Bars and second All-Around.
Overland will host the OHS Invitational starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24. 15 teams, including Cherry Creek, are slated to attend.
Cross Country – Cherry Creek gets firsts at the 2021 Fairgrounds 5K
The Cherry Creek girls and boys cross country teams took top honors on Sept. 18 at the Fairgrounds 5K invitational at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds. The Bruins took top honors in the team standings followed by Regis Jesuit and host Grandview in third. Eaglecrest came in seventh and Smoky Hill ninth overall.
Senior Riley Stewart, junior Addison Price and senior Claire Semerod took first, second and third respectively. Grandview senior Megan Ericksen finished 8th. The Bruins girls took six of the top ten spots in the finals.
On the boys’ side, Cherry Creek sophomore Daniel Hruska took top honors in the 5K final, with sophomore Ian Youngblood coming in second, and Grandview senior Tyler Garfield taking third.
