The week that was: A wrap-up of CCSD athletics for the week of Oct. 18
5A Softball – CCSD clubs come up short
A disappointing end to the 5A State Softball Tournament for No. 11 Smoky Hill High School and No. 13 Cherokee Trail High School.
The CTHS Cougars were first in action on Oct. 22 at Aurora Sports Park, going up against No. 4 and eventual state champion Legend High School. The Titans jumped on CT pitching and won by the score of 10-3. The Cougars finish the season at 17-11.
Later that day, the No. 11 SHHS Buffaloes took on No. 6 Mountain Vista. Mistakes and timely hitting got the Golden Eagles to a big lead by the fifth inning. The Buffaloes stormed back but the rally fell short, and Mountain Vista advanced with the 13-9 victory. Smoky Hill finishes the 2021 campaign at 23-5.
Field Hockey – State tournament is underway
The 2021 State Field Hockey Tournament started last Saturday with first and second round play-in games. Sixth-seeded Cherry Creek will travel to third-seeded Kent Denver for a quarterfinal match at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. Winner will advance to the final four on Oct. 28 at All-City Stadium. The State Championship will be played at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 All-City.

5A Cross Country – CCSD teams make state
District cross country teams will be well represented at the 5A State Championships, to be held on Oct. 30 at the Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs.
The Region 1 qualifying events were held Oct. 21 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
In the boys division, Cherokee Trail junior Hunter Strand came in first with a time of 16:07.5, followed by Cherry Creek sophomore Daniel Hruska at 16:3.7 and CT junior Reuben Holness, third at 16:39.9 Grandview senior Tyler Garfield was fourth at 16:43.5.
Cherokee Trail was first in team standings, followed by Grandview and Cherry Creek. All three teams qualified for state.
On the girls side, Cherry Creek senior Riley Stewart led the field by almost a minute, coming in first with a time of 17:17.5. Cherokee Trail junior McKenna Mazeski was second at 18:11.9 and Creek senior Shelby Balding was fifth at 18:42.8.
The Cherry Creek and Cherokee Trail girls teams came in second and third respectively, to qualify for the championships.

5A Boys Soccer – Grandview, Cherokee Trail and Cherry Creek advance to state
The 2021 5A Boys State Soccer Tournament field has been released and the district will have three teams on the pitch in the coming weeks.
Centennial League Champion Grandview is the 11th seed and will take on 22nd-seeded Regis Jesuit at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Legacy Stadium. Twelfth seed Cherokee Trail will take on 21st-seeded Pine Creek, at 5 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Legacy Stadium. Sixteenth-seeded Cherry Creek will host 17th seed Fossil Ridge on Oct. 27 at the Stutler Bowl at 4PM.
The 5A State Championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Switchbacks Weidner Field in Colorado Springs.

5A Football – 2021 season is winding down
District football clubs have one more week of regular season play after last weekend’s contests. CCSD teams went 3-3 in week 9.
On Oct. 22, Smoky Hill took on Centennial-leading Arapahoe at the Stutler Bowl. The Warriors came in with only one loss and just off a huge win over Cherry Creek on Oct. 15. Arapahoe amassed 31 unanswered points in the first half, on the way to a 38-14 win. The Buffs fall to 4-5 on the season and will wrap up the regular season against Cherry Creek at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29.
Also last Friday night, Grandview improved to 7-2 on the season with the 42-18 win over host Cherokee Trail at Legacy Stadium. After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams traded touchdown scores in the second, with the Wolves leading 14-12 at the break. But Grandview outscored the 5-4 Cougars 28-6 in the second half, to seal the win. Next up, Grandview takes on Arapahoe on Oct. 28 at Legacy. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. CT takes on Eaglecrest at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Legacy.
Finally last Friday night, Cherry Creek hosted Eaglecrest at the Stutler Bowl. Final score – Bruins 41, Raptors 14. Eaglecrest falls to a disappointing 1-8 and hosts CT on Oct. 29. Creek will host Smoky Hill at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Stutler Bowl.
On Oct. 23, the most competitive game of the week took place at Aurora Public Schools Stadium as Overland beat cross-town rival Rangeview in a defensive battle. Final score, Trailblazers 6, Raiders 0. The Blazers forced a Rangeview fumble and recovered with little time left to get the victory. Overland’s defense got five takeaways in all and now share the lead of the 5A Metro 2 Conference with the FNE Warriors with one game left to play. Up next, the 4-5 Trailblazers will host Aurora Hinkley at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the Stutler Bowl.
5A Boys Tennis – All-State teams announced
The 2021 All-State teams in 5A boys tennis were announced Oct. 20. The honors were compiled by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps, and are based on the results of the state tournament held on Oct. 16 at Gates Tennis Center.
Cherry Creek junior and No. 1 Singles State Champion Aram Izmirian was named Player of the Year and Bruins State Champion Coach Art Quinn was named Coach of the Year.
