5A Football – Cherry Creek is 5A Football State Champion for third straight year
The Cherry Creek High School Bruins won the 5A State Football Championship on Dec. 4, defeating favored and undefeated Valor Christian 21-0 at Empower Field at Mile High. It the third straight title for Creek and the 12th overall in program history.
For Head Coach Dave Logan, it’s the second time his teams have three-peated, as the Logan-led Mullen Mustangs won three consecutive Championships from 2008 to 2010. Coach Logan has won four state titles at the helm of the Bruins, and 10 overall at four schools in his career.
“Gosh it feels great,” Logan said. “I am so proud of our bunch. We beat a really good team today, and we worked hard on the game plan, and the kids, to their credit, they came out and just executed.”
The Bruin defense held the state’s top running back Gavin Sawchuck to 77 yards and stopped the Eagles’ big offensive weapon twice on 4th and 1 situations. Overall the Bruins (12-2) got three interceptions from seniors Henry Lamar and Tyler Tolbert, and one from junior outside linebacker Blake Purchase. Lamar’s theft was an 18-yard pick-6 which put the Bruins up 14-0 in the first quarter. Purchase led the Creek defense with 10 tackles on the afternoon. Valor finishes at 13-1.
Coach Logan noted how well his defense played.
“I was really proud of our physicality up front, running the ball and then having to get up and get the signal in from the sideline,” Logan said. “We condensed a few things, we didn’t have as many calls on defense as we normally do, but credit to our kids, I’ve never been more proud of a team than I am of this one.”
Bruins junior quarterback Christian Hammond threw two touchdown passes in the contest. Hammond hit junior tight end Max Rodriguez for 21 yards in the first quarter to open the scoring, and then scrambled out of trouble hitting junior Ismael Cisse for 39 yards and the TD near the end of the first half. That’s all the Bruins needed, as the Bruin defense shut out the Eagles for the rest of the afternoon.
Hammond said the Cherry Creek defense has lead the way all season long.
“Our defense, they’ve had us all year,” he said. “Even when the offense starts out slow, when were not ‘on it’ as much on the offensive side of the ball, our defense continues to get big stops, and they’re just really amazing.”
Coach Logan, who lost 34 seniors from last year’s championship team, said leadership was key.
“For a lot of these kids, it’s their first time (for a State Championship),” he said. ”We only have a handful of seniors that play significant minutes, so a lot of our kids who played today had not experienced this in the past, so this is new to them.”
Congratulations to the Bruins!
