Boys Volleyball – CCSD teams off to a good start
Cherokee Trail and Cherry Creek boys volleyball teams lead the Centennial League with overall marks of 6-0 and 7-1 respectively. The Cougars went 2-0 last week with wins over Grandview and Regis Jesuit to stay unbeaten. Creek went 4-0, including a huge win at then-undefeated Eaglecrest last Thursday. Up next, CT hosts Overland, and the Bruins are home to Grandview, both on Mar. 29.
The Eaglecrest Raptors are also 7-1 and 1-1 in the conference. A win over Valor Christian on Mar. 22 and the loss on Mar. 24 to the Bruins finished out the week. Next, the Raptors are on the road at Arapahoe on Tuesday night.
The Grandview Wolves went 1-1 last week to get to 3-1 overall on the young season. GHS got a 3-sets-to-none win on the road at Overland and a 3-0 home loss to Cherokee Trail. Up next, Cherry Creek on Mar. 29.
The newly-minted Overland Trailblazers went 0-2 last week with losses to ThunderRidge and Grandview. The Blazers continue play on Mar. 29 on the road at Cherokee Trail.
5A Baseball – District teams get ready for conference play
CCSD baseball clubs continued non-conference play last week. Centennial League competition begins for most teams in early April.
Cherokee Trail boasts a 4-1 record on the young season, going 1-1 last week. The Cougars got a league win over Eaglecrest in brutal wind and cold on Mar. 22, and lost to visiting Rock Canyon 10-8 on Saturday. On deck, Ralston Valley comes calling on Mar. 29.
The Raptors went 2-1 for the week. The road loss to CT and home wins over Vista Peak Thursday and Rocky Mountain Mar. 26. EHS takes on cross-town rival Rangeview on Mar. 29.
Grandview went 2-2 out of state at the Coach Bob Invite in the Phoenix area. The Wolves will start in-state play with Regis Jesuit on Mar. 31.
Overland went 2-0 during the week with wins at home over Vista Peak and Kennedy. Up next, Standley Lake on Mar. 29.
Smoky Hill went 1-2 last week, getting a 4-2 win over Highlands Ranch last Friday. The Buffaloes head down to Parker and Legend High School to take on the Titans on Mar. 28.
Cherry Creek has yet to win a ballgame on the young season. The Bruins lost to Regis Jesuit on the road last Friday, and look for their first win of the year against Pine Creek on Mar. 28.
5A Girls Basketball – Grandview’s Betts and Ulitzky honored
The 2021-22 All-State Girls Basketball teams were named on Friday.
5A State Champion Grandview’s Lauren Betts was named Player of the Year, and Head Coach Josh Ulitzky was named Coach of the Year. Wolves forward Marya Hudgins also got First Team honors.

Just In – Smoky Hill names new football head coach
On March 28, Smoky Hill High School named Brandon Alconcel as the 12th head football in program history. Alconcel, 38, hails from southern California where he played high school football. He played four years at Colorado State University. Alconcel, 38, has coached at the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State and Adams State College.
His high school coaching career includes stops at Overland, head coach at Rangeview and most recently, a position coach at Eaglecrest. Alconcel is currently a physical education teacher at Cherry Creek Elevation.
“I feel great. I thought this was a really good fit,” he said. “I plan to try to keep the team together, as far as off-season workouts and other areas. I think the kids were excited to hear the news.”
Alconcel succeeds Tom Thenell who took a coaching position at Colorado Mesa earlier this year. Coach Alconcel has worked with the Smoky Hill football program as director of player development since last January, so he is familiar with the previous system. He is married and has three children.
