The week that was: A wrap-up of CCSD Athletics for the week of May 30
5A Baseball – Cherokee Trail takes third overall in State
The 7th-seeded Cherokee Trail baseball team created a lot of excitement in the last two weeks. The Cougars played their way into the championship series with victories over 2nd-seeded Legacy and No. 1-seeded Regis Jesuit on May 27 and 28, setting them up for the Final Four starting last Friday at All-City Stadium in Denver.
In the first contest, CT took on No. 5 and eventual State Champion Broomfield. The bats came alive for Head Coach Jon DiGiorgio’s charges including a 6th inning homerun by junior Tommy Munch to hand the Eagles their first loss with a score of 12-8. The Cougars took an early 6-0 lead, which ballooned to 12-4 by the top of the 7th. The Cougars withstood a 4-run Broomfield rally to get the win.
Up next, on Saturday, was No. 2 Legacy, whom the Cougars defeated the week before in the first round. Tied at 1 after 2 innings, CT broke it open in the 3rd with 4 runs to take a 5-1 lead, and added 1 more tally to lead 6-1 after 4 innings. But the Lightning answered with a 2-out, 5-run rally in the 5th to tie the contest at 6. Legacy would continue the scoring with 3 runs in the top of the 6th to take a 9-6 lead. The Cougars scored 2 runs in the home-half of the frame to draw within one, but that ended the scoring and Cherokee Trail was eliminated by the eventual state runner-up 9-8.
Congratulations to CTHS Baseball as they end a great 2022 campaign at 21-8 and third overall in Colorado!
5A Girls State Golf – Cherry Creek and Cherokee Trail play well on a tough course
The 5A Girls State Golf tournament was played on May 31-June 1 at The Olde Course at Loveland. Cool and damp conditions greeted the players on the second day of competition, and the links were a great challenge to most of the field during play.
The Cherry Creek team of freshman Caitlyn Chin, junior Maddie Li and sophomore Kate Cowser combined for a two-round total of 499 to place third overall in the competition, behind Loveland (477) and State Champion Valor Christian (469). The Cougars, with freshman Kayleigh Babineaux, junior Bead Boonta, senior Devin Gilbreath and junior Haylee Clark shot a total of 519 to take sixth.
Cherokee Trail’s showing was special for Head Coach Justin Jajczyk.
“The course played extremely tough for everybody,” Coach Jajczyk said.”There were a lot of obstacles for these girls to face, but they battled, and I’m so proud of them for everything they accomplished this year. This was one of the most successful teams in school history, winning the regional championship a few weeks ago for the first time, and a second place finish in the league, so we’re excited,” he added.
Individually, it was the Bruins’ Chin who finished with a total of 155-after shooting a terrific 2-over-74 on day 2, combined with an 81 on Tuesday, putting the freshman in 5th place overall, four spots behind State Champion Katelyn Lehigh, who shot a 2-day total of 144.
“I’ve been playing golf since I was seven, so I feel like I was pretty prepared for this tournament,” Chin said. “The first day I felt I could have done a lot better, so I came out today to improve, and I did.”
Cherokee Trail’s Bunta had a two-day total of 163 good for an 11th-place tie.
“The course was difficult, especially with the weather conditions,” Boonta said. “It was a little bit windy, a little bit cold and wet, so it was a little bit different.”
