Preschool Palooza gives incoming students a peek at the fun to come

Student at Preschool PaloozaPreschool is fun!

That’s what nearly 600 new preschoolers and their families discovered at the Cherry Creek Schools Preschool Palooza, held Aug. 8 on the grounds of Eastridge Community Elementary. After a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Preschool Palooza was back, bigger and better than ever.

“It’s a really fun, fun day, mostly focused on community,” said Stacey Peoples, director of Early Childhood Education (ECE) for Cherry Creek Schools. “It’s very light, welcoming, and low-key, but promotes early childhood education.”

Preschool PaloozaFamilies were greeted by lots of friendly faces as they arrived at the event. ECE employees – some dressed up as fairies – welcomed students, siblings, parents, and guardians, and guided them through the carnival-like set-up. There were tents where the first-time students could get their picture taken or do simple arts and crafts. The youngsters could also get a dental check-up and a vision screening and every new preschooler got to pick out a free book to take home. Parent Mays Jaff, mother of 4-year-old Jan, said it was great to have so many resources in one place.

“It helps a lot. We don’t need to go to other places, we can find everything here,” she said.

Preschool PaloozaBut the biggest attraction for students was meeting their new teachers. Every CCSD preschool site had a tent where kids could play carnival games and students and teachers could spend a little time getting to know each other. There were shy smiles and big grins, high fives and hugs, as educators began building relationships with their soon-to-be students and their families. Relationships are one of the Cherry Creek School District’s Core Values, and they are key to every student’s social, emotional, and academic growth.

Early childhood education also has a positive impact on student success.

“All of the research is clear – kids who get support in early childhood do so much better in school. They read, they write, they do math better, simply by learning to play at a young age,” Peoples said.

Preschool PaloozaCherry Creek Schools offers high-quality, affordable preschool at 24 locations across the district’s 108 square miles. The district offers three preschool programs: Colorado Preschool Program, Special Education, and Tuition-based. Morning and afternoon sessions are held Monday-Thursday, and the district’s new Preschool Enrichment program gives parents the option of adding additional half-days and/or Fridays.

“We are an exceptional preschool program,” Peoples said. “Our program features an extremely low staff-to-student ratio and a comprehensive, scientifically based, early childhood curriculum. We help youngsters develop the academic and social skills they need for kindergarten and beyond.”
