Football: Week 4 - Eaglecrest stays unbeaten
Cherry Creek School District football teams went 4-2 in week 4 and the Eaglecrest Raptors stayed perfect. The week also featured a thrilling finish on the Western Slope.
Eaglecrest 21, Rocky Mountain 3 – At French Field, Fort Collins, CO
The Eaglecrest football team came out of week 4 last Friday as the district’s only unbeaten team with a 21-3 victory over host Rocky Mountain. Senior Tyson Clark hooked up with sophomore wideout Xavier Waldron for a touchdown and senior Diego Cearns rushed for a score. The stout Raptor defense held the Lobos to a field goal for all 60 minutes. The highlight of the night came as senior Peyton Taylor returned a Rocky punt for a touchdown. Up next, Eaglecrest (4-0) takes on the Lakewood Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Jefferson County Stadium.
Cherry Creek 62, Arvada West 21 – At the Stutler Bowl
Also on Friday, Cherry Creek celebrated homecoming with an emphatic 62-21 win over Arvada West. After being tied 7-7 after one quarter of play, the Bruins reeled off 48 2nd quarter points with the Creek defense doing most of the damage with five interceptions on the night. Led by junior Jordan Herron’s two trips to the end zone, the Bruins offense racked up 230 yards rushing with four touchdowns in the win. Senior Brian Rudden also had two touchdown passes. Up next, Creek (3-1) hosts Regis Jesuit 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Stutler Bowl.
Cherokee Trail 27, Fort Collins 13 – At Legacy Stadium
Finally on Friday, Cherokee Trail evened its record at 2-2 with a win over visiting Fort Collins. The contest was tied into the 3rd quarter when the Cougars scored two touchdowns. Sophomore Noah Clark got into the end zone from 2 yards out, and after a Lambkins turnover, sophomore Peyton Sommers hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass. In the 4th, senior defensive back Kalib Davis returned a pick-6 for 39 yards and the TD to close out the scoring. Next up, CT hosts Castle View at 7 p.m. Friday night at Legacy Stadium.
Grandview 38, Fruita Monument 37 (OT) – At Stocker Stadium, Grand Junction, CO
The most thrilling game of the weekend came last Thursday on the Western Slope as the Wolves pulled out a close game against the host Wildcats. After trading scores in the first quarter, Fruita Monument took a 20-16 lead to the break. Moving to the 4th quarter, both teams traded scores and finished regulation tied after a Wildcat field goal sent the game into overtime. Fruita scored on their possession to make the score 37-30, and the Wolves answered with sophomore Donavon Vernon hitting paydirt from 2 yards out. Head Coach Tom Doherty rolled the dice and had junior quarterback Liam Szarka (three touchdown passes on the night) call his own number and he ran into the end zone for the gutsy 2-point conversion to seal the 1-point win. Next, the Wolves (3-1) host Pomona at 7 p.m., next Thursday, Sept. 22 at Legacy Stadium.
Palmer Ridge 44, Smoky Hill 16 – At Don Breese Stadium, Monument Colorado
