EHS girls wrestling teamWrestling: Eaglecrest boys and girls teams stand out at area invites 

The Eaglecrest boys and girls wrestling teams showed well this past weekend. The Raptor girls won overall team honors at the Arvada Invitational held Jan. 13-14. EHS bested second place Loveland and third place Brighton.

Eaglecrest took home three championship titles. Sophomore Natalie Replogle at 135 pounds, senior Gianna Falise (Grandview) at 155 pounds and defending State Champion Blythe Cayko at 190 pounds.

5A Boys Wrestling: Smoky Hill Tournament of ChampionsFor the boys, Eaglecrest placed second at the Smoky Hill Armando Rodriguez Tournament of Champions held Jan. 13-14. The Raptors were just edged out by overall team winner Grand Junction. Rocky Mountain came in third.

The Raptors took the top of the podium in three weight classes. Junior Adonias Cantu at 113 pounds, sophomore Alijah Gabaldon at 126 pounds, and junior Dalton Leivian at 215 pounds.

Also, this past weekend, the Grandview boys wrestlers came in third overall at the Arvada West Invitational. Freshman Jonathan Montes Gonzalez took top honors at 138 pounds.

Girls Swimming: CTHS and CCHS show well at the Smoky Hill Invite

The Cherokee Trail girls swim & dive team took second place overall in the team standings at last weekend’s Smoky Hill Invitational. The Cougars were bested by team winner Columbine, and edged out Cherry Creek, which finished third. Cherry Creek BLUE finished fifth, Smoky Hill came in sixth, Eaglecrest 11th, and Smoky Hill GREEN finished 12th.

Individually, Cherry Creek sophomore Ruth Spiegel took first place in the 1-meter diving event; CT freshman Bella Lane tied for first in the 50-yard freestyle; Cherry Creek BLUE placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay; Bruins senior Katie Cohen took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

6A Girls Basketball: Kennedy at OHSGirls and Boys Basketball: District teams readying for conference play

CCSD basketball clubs finished out non-conference play last week. Centennial League games begin on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

In girl’s play, 12-1 Cherokee Trail got a win over Legend on Jan. 9. The Cougars start Centennial play at Grandview on Jan. 18. 10-3 Overland went 2-0 last week with wins over Kennedy and Thornton. Next, the Blazers host Mullen on Wednesday. Eaglecrest improved to 10-3 with wins over Chaparral and Rangeview to get ready for the league opener at Smoky Hill on Wednesday. Cherry Creek also boasts a 10-3 mark, with wins last week over Rangeview and Doherty. The Bruins will host Arapahoe in conference play this Wednesday. Grandview (7-5) fell to No. 1 Valor Christian on Jan. 11. The Wolves will host CT on Jan. 18. Finally, Smoky Hill (2-10) has losses to Denver North and Palmer last week. The Buffs will host Eaglecrest in the conference opener on Wednesday evening.

6A Boys Basketball: Doherty at CCHSOn the boys’ side, Smoky Hill sports a 10-2 mark entering league play. The Buffs finished their non-conference schedule with a win over Manual last Thursday. SHHS hosts A-Town rival Eaglecrest on Wednesday night. Grandview (6-5) got a win over Rangeview on Jan. 11. The Wolves will host Cherokee Trail on Wednesday. Cherry Creek got big wins over Regis Jesuit Doherty this past week. The Bruins (7-6) will host Arapahoe to start Centennial play on Wednesday. Eaglecrest lost at Rock Canyon last Tuesday. The 7-6 Raptors are on the road at Smoky Hill on Wednesday. The 5-8 Overland Trailblazers split games last week, with a road loss at Lewis-Palmer and a big win at George Washington last Saturday. The Blazers will entertain Mullen on Wednesday as league play begins. Cherokee Trail (4-8) also split games last week, with a win at Rampart, and a home loss to Cheyenne Central (WY). The Cougars are at Grandview to start league play on Jan. 18.
