Girls and boys wrestling: CCSD clubs have a busy week
District wrestling clubs continued competition last week, with the State Wrestling Championships a little more than two weeks away. The championships will be held Feb. 16-18 at Ball Arena in Denver.
For the boys, No. 9 Eaglecrest hosted No. 10 Grandview in a big meet on Jan. 26. Grandview prevailed 39-32 in a tough, close contest which was decided in the last match.
“That was intense, that was crazy,” Wolves Head Coach Ryan Budd said. “I knew it was going to come down to bonus points - giving them up or not giving them up - and making sure that we got them. We had a lot of guys step up tonight who were not favored in their matches, and who didn’t give up that extra bonus point,” he added.
Grandview senior and heavyweight Cayden Bird clinched the win for the Wolves with a pin of his opponent in the last match of the evening.
“I’m so excited and pumped that we get to start the weekend off right,” Bird said.

The GHS Wolves have a chance to clinch the Centennial League top spot when they face the Smoky Hill Buffaloes on Feb. 2.
On the girls’ side, 7th-ranked Eaglecrest finished 5th overall at the Chatfied War Horse Invitational hosted by the Chargers on Jan. 27-28.

Girls and boys basketball: League play continues
District clubs were back at it in Centennial League play last week, with lots of closely contested ballgames.
On the boys’ side, 3rd-ranked Smoky Hill went 3-0 last week, with conference wins over Arapahoe and Mullen. The 14-2 Buffs have an A-Town showdown with Eaglecrest on Jan. 30. The 9-7 Raptors went 2-1 for the week, winning over Mullen and Overland and losing at Cherry Creek. Next, EHS takes on Smoky Hill on the road on Monday night. Grandview was 2-1 last week, winning at Mullen and Overland, and losing out-of-conference against Columbine. The Wolves (9-7) take on CTHS on Jan. 30. Cherry Creek lost to Overland at home and won on the road at the Nest at Eaglecrest. The Bruins (8-8) host Arapahoe on Monday night. Overland (6-10) also split last week with the big win at Creek last Wednesday and a tough overtime loss at home to Grandview. Mullen visits the Trailblazers on Jan 30. The 6-10 Cherokee Trail Cougars went 2-1 with a win out-of-league at Golden, a Centennial loss at Eaglecrest, and a win at Arapahoe. CTHS is on the road at Grandview on Monday night.
For the girls, the No. 3 Cherry Creek Bruins are in a first-place tie with Grandview for the Centennial lead after last week’s contests. The Bruins (13-3) went 2-0 last week, and will host Arapahoe on Monday, Jan. 30. The 11-5 Grandview Wolves improved to 3-0 in the league, going 3-0 last week. GHS got league wins over Mullen and Overland and won out-of-conference against Regis Jesuit. Next, Cherokee Trail visits the Wolves on Monday. The Cougars are 14-2 with wins over Eaglecrest and a tough home loss to Arapahoe on Jan. 28. CTHS is at Grandview on Jan. 30. Eaglecrest (11-5) was 0-2 last week with home losses to CTHS and Creek. The Cougars visit Smoky Hill on Monday evening. Overland (10-6) last week took losses at Cherry Creek and home to Grandview. The Blazers host Mullen on Monday. Smoky Hill (2-13) was 0-2 for the week and hosts Eaglecrest on Jan. 30.
High School Officiating: CHSAA taking steps to improve pay
The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) is beginning to construct a framework for improving pay for officials in all high school sports. CHSAA had the first of two Legislative Council meetings last Tuesday where issues were discussed. The severe shortage of officials has been a concern for Colorado high school athletics since the pandemic in 2020. Read more about the situation here.
