Girls Swimming & Diving – District clubs compete at the A League Championships
The Centennial A-League Swimming and Diving Championships were held Feb. 4-5 at Arapahoe High School. Additional positions to qualify for the 2023 State Swim and Dive Championships were at stake for each club throughout the weekend.
Cherry Creek took the top team honors, besting host Arapahoe. Cherokee Trail placed 3rd, and Grandview 4th.
In the individual events, Grandview sophomore Addison Campbell took the top spot on the podium in 1 Meter Diving, with Wolves Junior Tanvi Jitta placing 3rd.
Cherry Creek senior Haley Ross took 2nd place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, and Creek senior Katie Cohen finished 3rd.
In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, Smoky Hill freshman Cameryn Walkup finished 2nd, with Cherry Creek sophomore Ana Loveridge taking 3rd.
Grandview junior Amelia Brown took top honors in the 50 Yard Freestyle, Cherokee Trail junior Sarah Woren came in 2nd and Bruin senior Maren McDonald finished 3rd.
Cherokee Trail senior Morgan Walker finished 3rd in the 100 Yard Butterfly.
The Wolves’ Amelia Brown was on the top of the podium for a second time in the 100 Yard Freestyle, with Creek junior Charlotte Wilson taking 3rd.
Bruins freshman Madison Williams came in 1st in the 500 Yard Freestyle, with freshman teammate Teagan Denne placing 3rd.
Cherry Creek senior Alexis Greenhawt won the 100 Yard Backstroke, and Grandview junior Keira Vail came in 3rd.
The 100 Yard Breaststroke saw Grandview senior Paige Daley place 2nd, with Wolves’ junior teammate Kaitlyn Hafer finishing 3rd.
In team events, the afternoon swimming session began with Cherry Creek winning the 200 Yard Medley Relay, with Grandview finishing 3rd. Cherry Creek also took the podium’s top spot in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, while Grandview finished 2nd, and Cherokee Trail came in 3rd. The day’s events ended as Cherry Creek took first overall in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, with Grandview coming in 2nd.
The 5A State Girls Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 7-10 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) in Thornton.
District Basketball: Cherokee Trail girls and Eaglecrest boys get big wins
CCSD girls and boys basketball clubs continued jockeying for position in the 6A Centennial League last week. The regular season ends on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with the Centennial League Tournament for both coming up on Feb. 11.
On the girls’ side, Cherry Creek (16-3, 6-0) stayed perfect in the conference, going 3-0 during the week with victories at home over Arapahoe and Smoky Hill, and on the road at Grandview. Next, the Bruins have a league showdown at Cherokee Trail on Feb. 8.
The Cherokee Trail Cougars sport a 17-2 record (5-1 in the conference) and also went 3-0 last week. A huge 60-57 victory at Grandview last Monday was a highlight for the program. CTHS also had wins over Mullen and Overland. Next is the home showdown with Centennial leader Cherry Creek on Wednesday evening.
The Eaglecrest Raptors (13-6, 3-3) went 2-1 last week, defeating Smoky Hill and Grandview, but falling to Arapahoe last Wednesday. EHS is on the road at Mullen on Feb. 8.
Overland (11-8, 1-5) went 1-2 during the week. The Trailblazers are on the road at Arapahoe on Wednesday evening.
The 2-16 (0-6 in the Centennial) Smoky Hill Buffaloes went 0-3 for the week, and will take on Cherry Creek on the road Feb. 8.
For the boys, Smoky Hill sports the district’s best overall record at 16-3 (5-1 in the Centennial). Head Coach Anthony Hardin’s charges posted a 2-1 record last week, losing at home to Eaglecrest, and getting wins over Overland at home and winning a tough overtime contest 80-75 at Cherry Creek. The Buffs close out the regular season hosting Grandview on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
12-7 Grandview improved to 5-1 in the league, going 3-0 last week. Home wins over Cherokee Trail, Cherry Creek and a win over Eaglecrest on the road kept the Wolves in a tie for the Centennial lead. They face a big test on the road with conference co-leader Smoky Hill on Wednesday night.
Eaglecrest went 2-1 during the week. The 11-8 Raptors (4-2 in the conference) got a huge 79-71 road win in front of a raucous, packed house at Smoky Hill, won at Arapahoe, but lost at home to Grandview. Eaglecrest will close out the regular season on Wednesday night at Mullen.
Cherokee Trail (7-12, 2-4) was 1-2 last week. The Cougars’ lone win came on the road last Saturday at Overland. Up next, CT hosts Cherry Creek on Feb. 8 to close out the campaign.
The Trailblazers also sport a 7-12 record (2-4 in the conference) as they went 1-2 during the week. A tough 64-62 home win over Mullen started things out on a positive note, but a road loss at Smoky and a loss at home to Cherokee Trail followed. The Blazers finish the regular season schedule by hosting Arapahoe on Feb. 8.
The 9-10 Cherry Creek Bruins also fell to 2-4 in the Centennial League with a loss at Grandview and a tough 80-75 home loss to Smoky Hill. The Bruins will finish up at Cherokee Trail on Feb. 8.
