John ThompsonSmoky Hill High School Athletic Director John Thompson was voted the Centennial Conference Athletic Director of the Year for the 2022-23 school year. Thompson was selected by his peers in the conference last week. The honor puts Thompson in the running for the Colorado Athletic Directors Association (CADA) 5A Athletic Director of the Year.

“I feel very humbled to know that they think of me the way I think of them. That’s the best way I can put it,” Thompson said. We have a great league and I work with some great people.”

Coach John ThompsonThompson is in his eighth year as the Buffaloes athletic director. He started as a math teacher at Smoky Hill in 2002. From 2006 to 2012, he taught math and coached the Buffs football team. He is a Smoky Hill graduate from the class of 1981. After high school, he attended the University of Northern Colorado, where he walked on for Bears football and “started off and on.” He graduated from UNC in 1985.

Thompson says his focus is always on the student athletes he works with.

“We’re trying to create the best avenue for kids to be able to participate,” he said. “Everybody wants to win, there’s no question about that, obviously, but not everybody can win. So, we want to give kids the best experience we can give them. It’s about kids having a chance to do something they like doing,” he added.

Congratulations to Smoky Hill Athletic Director John Thompson.
