Across the Cherry Creek School District, students and teachers, parents and families, staff and community members are getting ready to “Read Together, Dream Together,” during Cherry Creek Reads 2023, coming up March 13-17.
The featured book for this districtwide celebration of reading is Someone Builds the Dream, written by acclaimed author Lisa Wheeler and New York Times bestselling illustrator Loren Long. This joyous and profound picture book celebrates the dreamers and the dream-builders – the many people involved in making dreams come true.
The book begins:
“All across this great big world, jobs are getting done
by many hands in many lands. It takes much more than ONE.”
“We want our students to dream big dreams,” said Kim Casali, teacher librarian at Buffalo Trail Elementary.
“We also want them to know that we all need help to make our dreams come true, and sometimes that help comes from our teachers, our families, our friends, and our fellow dreamers,” added Karen Connors, teacher librarian at High Plains Elementary.
Cherry Creek Reads, now in its fifth year, brings the Cherry Creek Schools community together to read for fun, just for the pure joy of reading! Research shows that reading – whether for pleasure, or for a purpose, like school or work – has many benefits. It’s no surprise that reading increases comprehension and vocabulary. In fact, children learn 4,000 to 12,000 new words every year through reading. Reading can also increase empathy, ease depression, reduce stress and improve sleep.
During Cherry Creek Reads 2023, students, parents, teachers, staff, friends, and family members are encouraged to read for 68 minutes or more. That’s one minute of reading for every Cherry Creek school. Students may also participate in a variety of special activities, from student-created podcasts, videos, or posters about their dreams, to messaging a favorite author or illustrator, or school-wide “Drop Everything and Read” time.
