CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of Sept. 11

5A Football: CCHS at Arvada West5A Football: CCSD clubs go 4-2 in week 4

Two CCSD football teams remain undefeated after week 4 of non-conference play, which was hampered by inclement weather conditions.

On Sept. 14, No. 1 Cherry Creek maintained a perfect record at a cool and very wet North Area Athletic Complex as the Bruins defeated Arvada West 42-0. Creek was led by sophomore quarterback Brady Vodicka’s 226 passing yards and three touchdowns. Junior Jeremiah Inman also threw for a touchdown. Next, the Bruins (4-0) will take on Regis Jesuit at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22 at Legacy Stadium. The Raiders will be the home team for the contest as Regis’ Lou Kellogg Stadium is still undergoing renovation.

5A Football: Rocky Mountain at EHSEaglecrest is also undefeated, as the Raptors got a win in their home-opener last Thursday evening in the rain at Legacy Stadium. The final score was EHS 34, Lobos 9. The Raptors (4-0) were led by junior Joe Steiner’s three touchdown passes. Steiner also ran for a score in the win. Next, Eaglecrest hosts Lakewood at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Legacy Stadium.

Grandview improved to 3-1 with a 42-21 win over Fruita Monument last Saturday at Legacy Stadium. Senior quarterback Liam Szarka passed for 188 yards and four touchdowns. Senior wideout Nate Denton caught two touchdown passes for the win. Next, the Wolves are on the road to face Pomona for a 7 p.m contest on Friday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

Cherokee Trail is now 2-2 after a big 35-31 win over Fort Collins last Thursday at French Field. Junior quarterback Tyson Smith threw two touchdowns, and junior Eliot Ming threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the victory. Up next, CT will be on the road to take on Castle View at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Douglas County Stadium.

5A Football: Heritage at OHSOverland fell to 1-3 with a 57-15 loss to Heritage last Thursday at the Stutler Bowl, where lightning delays made for a long night. Trailblazers' senior Talil Seals-Fisher passed to junior Avante Hendrix for a touchdown, and junior Jarrius Ward rushed for another score. At 7 p.m. on Sept. 21, OHS will host Grand Junction at the Stutler Bowl.

Smoky Hill fell to 4A No. 1 Palmer Ridge last Saturday at the Stutler Bowl, in a game that was rescheduled because of inclement weather on Friday night. Final score, Bears 49, Buffaloes 0. Smoky (1-3) will try to get back to the win column when the Buffaloes take on Highlands Ranch at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Halftime Help Stadium in Parker.

CTHS Softball TeamGirls Softball: District teams battling it out in the Centennial League

CCSD softball clubs continued conference play last week, with four teams in a close race in the Centennial League.

Cherokee Trail went 2-0 last week, improving to 3-0 in the conference. Wins at Grandview and a home win over Smoky Hill vaulted the Cougars to a 9-3 record overall. Next, the Cougars take on Eaglecrest at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18.

Cherry Creek split their games last week. A home win over Arapahoe and a road loss to Eaglecrest have the Bruins sporting a 7-6-1 record, going 3-1 in league play. Creek hosts Grandview at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 18 at Village Green Fields.

Grandview (8-5) (2-1) was winless last week, losing at home to CT and on the road in a non-conference game at Legend. The Wolves next take on the Bruins at 4:15 p.m. on Monday at Village Green Fields.

Eaglecrest also boasts a 9-3 record overall this season and is 1-1 in league play. The Raptors were 2-0 for the week, winning at Denver East on Monday and at Cherry Creek on Wednesday. Eaglecrest hosts Cherokee Trail in a huge game at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 18.

Smoky Hill (2-11) (0-3) was 0-2 last week, falling to Valor and Cherokee Trail. The Buffs are at Arapahoe at 4 p.m. on Monday.

Overland (3-9) (1-5 in the Denver Prep League) lost a league game with Denver East at home last Tuesday. The Blazers are at Englewood at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Boys Golf5A Boys Golf: State Regional play begins this week

Boys golf teams will begin 5A State Regional play on Sept. 19-20.

Teams and individual players will try to qualify for spots at the 5A State Championships, which will be held on Oct. 2-3 at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins.
