CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of Sept. 18

5A Boys Golf: CTHS5A Boys Golf: District teams qualify for State

CCSD boys golfers are headed to the State Championships after qualifying in 5A regional tournaments held on Sept. 20 and 21.

In 5A Central Region play last Wednesday, Cherokee Trail took both team and individual championships at the University of Denver Golf Club in Highlands Ranch. The Cougars team of freshman Anthony Chen, junior Chris O’Donnell, and sophomores Brayden Forte and Dalton Sisneros combined for a tourney best 211, besting Rock Canyon and Castle View. Smoky Hill finished eighth overall. The Cougars’ Forte was the individual champion on the day, posting a 3-under 69. Smoky Hill sophomore Hudson Roth also qualified for the state championships with an 82.

5A Boys Golf: CCHSOn Thursday, the Cherry Creek Bruins foursome of senior Pratham Parmar and juniors Wyatt Isgrig, Henry Starr, and Andre Dumonteil took first place at the Southern Regional Tournament at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada. The Bruins final score of 209 edged out Denver East and Highlands Ranch, who tied for second. Eaglecrest came in fifth with a 212. In individual play, Eaglecrest sophomore Gregory White shot a 4-under 66 to take the top spot in the tourney. The Bruins’ Wyatt Isgrig and Henry Starr tied for third overall, both coming in at 68.

In 5A Western Region play on Sept. 21, Grandview junior Michael Rosman shot a 3-over 73 to qualify for the state tournament.

The 2023 5A Boys State Golf Championships will take place on Oct. 3 and 4 at Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins.

5A Football: CCHS vs Regis5A Football: Cherry Creek and Eaglecrest stay perfect

Week 5 in 5A football saw district teams go 3-3 in the final week of non-conference play.

Cherry Creek went to 5-0 last Friday, with a 47-28 win over host Regis Jesuit at Legacy Stadium. The Raiders were the home team at the CCSD facility as Lou Kellogg Stadium is still under renovation. Bruins sophomore quarterback Brady Vodicka passed for four touchdowns, and senior running back Jordan Herron ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Creek turnovers kept the game close with a 28-21 score at halftime, but the Bruins pulled away, outscoring the Raiders 19-7 through the rest of the game. Next, the Bruins host Cherokee Trail in conference play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Stutler Bowl.

Eaglecrest is also perfect after a 44-7 road win over Lakewood on Thursday at the North Area Athletic Complex (NAAC). Junior quarterback Joe Steiner passed for one touchdown and ran for another. Junior running back Kota Becker ran for two touchdowns in the win. Up next, the Raptors (5-0) start league play versus Grandview at 7 p.m. Friday at Legacy Stadium.

Those Wolves improved to 4-1 on the season last Friday with a 35-14 win over Pomona at the NAAC. The Panthers led 14-7 after one half of play, but GHS scored 28 unanswered points in the second to seal the victory. Senior Liam Szarka provided the offense for Grandview, as he threw two touchdowns and ran for two others. Junior Donavon Vernon also rushed for a score. Next, it’s a big conference opener on Friday night as the Wolves host Eaglecrest at 7 p.m. at Legacy.

5A Football: CTHS vs Castle ViewCherokee Trail fell to 2-3 on Sept. 21 at Douglas County Stadium, losing to host Castle View. The final score was 23-7 Sabercats. Junior quarterback Eliot Ming threw for 158 yards and a touchdown to senior Peyton Castro for the lone Cougars score. CT starts league play next Thursday at 7 p.m. against Cherry Creek at the Stutler Bowl.

Overland improved to 2-3 with a 21-13 homecoming win over Grand Junction last Thursday at the Stutler Bowl. Blazers’ junior Jarrius Ward had two touchdowns, including a 95-yard scamper in the win. Overland begins league play in the 5A Metro North on the road against Westminister at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29.

Smoky Hill is 1-4 after being shut out 41-0 by Highlands Ranch last week at Halftime Help Stadium. The Buffs start Centennial League play at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 when they host Arapahoe at the Stutler Bowl.

Girls Gymnastics: OHS InvitationalGymnastics: Overland takes second at OHS Invitational

The Overland Trailblazers had a great showing at their school-hosted event last Saturday. The Blazers were runners-up to first place Palmer Ridge in a field of 16 schools in the overall team standings. OHS finished with a score of 177.575 points to Palmer Ridge’s 179.125. Cherry Creek came in eighth with a score of 167.850.

Sophomore Ainsley Renner (Grandview) took the all-around individual title, besting Palmer Ridge’s Makenna Cook and Overland senior and teammate Kyla Burke, who finished third.

5A Boys Tennis: 5A Team Tennis brackets announced

The Cherry Creek High School Bruins will represent the district in the 5A Team Tennis Championships which start Sept. 27. Team brackets were announced Sept. 25. The Bruins are the No. 2 seed in 5A and will host 15th-seeded Centaurus on Sept 27. Regis Jesuit is the No. 1 seed. Higher seeds will host through the semifinal round. Championships will be played on Oct. 17, time and place TBA.
