Friday night football game is one of CCHS homecoming highlights
“Homecoming is the biggest time of the year.”
Senior Hunter Kinchen was one of hundreds of Cherry Creek High School students who packed the east stands at the Stutler Bowl for the homecoming football game on Oct. 6.
“I came to homecoming to support the players,” he said. “We have a couple of friends in the marching band, we came to support them at halftime. The cheerleaders, the student leaders. It’s all an amazing vibe. I’m glad to be here.”
The game is one of the signature events of a homecoming week filled with fun for students, families, alumni, and community members.
“It has been incredible,” CCHS Activities Director Kelly Devitt said. “We have had such good participation. We had a packed house today at the assembly and at all of our different events. Kids showing up, having a blast with their friends, just enjoying being high school kids. It’s been an amazing, amazing week.”
Homecoming week at Creek includes time-honored traditions like dress up days, the powderpuff game, and Jazz on the Green, featuring Union Street Jazz, the CCHS jazz choir. Then there are newer events, including the SuperSmash video game tournament, and the CreekSync lip-syncing contest.
The Friday night homecoming game didn’t disappoint either. It started with a pregame community carnival with food trucks and games the whole family could enjoy. Halftime featured high-energy performances by the CCHS cheer and pom squads, and part of the Bruin marching band’s 80’s-themed “Can you dig it?” field show. Then the 2023 homecoming court was introduced. Students from each grade level were nominated by school clubs, organizations, and sports teams.
“What’s really exciting is that we have kids from all sorts of different areas of the school, so we have kids from Unified sports, the football team, Speech & Debate, FBLA, marching band, and more. It’s a really exciting way for kids to support their friends,” Activities Director Devitt said.
The No. 1 ranked and reigning State Champions Bruins football team remained unbeaten, shutting out their homecoming opponent. The game made for a fabulous Friday night lead-in to the homecoming dance on Saturday night.
“There’s a lot of pride in being a Cherry Creek Bruin,” Devitt said.
