CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of March 11, 2024

Grandview's Sienna BettsGrandview's Sienna Betts6A Girls Basketball: Grandview’s Sienna Betts named Gatorade POY

The honors keep rolling in for Grandview junior forward Sienna Betts. The 6’4” Wolves forward was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Colorado for the second straight year.

“It’s nice, and I’m happy,” Betts said. “My teammates are very supportive, and so is my coach (Josh Ulitzky). I have such a good coach.”

This is the fourth year in a row the award has been bestowed on a player with the last name of Betts. Older sister Lauren, getting ready for the NCAA Tournament as a UCLA sophomore, won the award in 2021 and 2022. Sienna Betts has committed to play for the Bruins, where she’ll be joining her big sister starting in 2025.

“It will be really nice. It’s really not the reason I committed there, but it’s certainly a part of it, a nice perk,” Betts said. “It will be good for my freshman year to have someone guide me, because freshman year is the hardest year.”

While honored to be recognized, Betts said she has other goals on her mind, mostly because of the early exit from the 2024 State Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 this past season.

“Right now my focus is a lot on club (basketball) during the summer, but I’m around my high school teammates a lot, so we are always talking about next year and how we have to do some things differently, Betts said. “I’ll be talking to Coach Josh about how we can prepare, and I’m super excited for next season.”

Spring Sports: Weather causes postponements for the district

The spring storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on the Cherry Creek School District last Thursday played havoc with athletic schedules. Competition in baseball, lacrosse and soccer were all affected. In addition, spring break started for the district on March 18. District athletic directors will reschedule events in the coming weeks. Some CCSD baseball teams will continue play in Arizona and New Mexico during spring break.

5A Girls Golf: Centennial play is underway

District girls golf teams managed to beat the weather problems last Wednesday morning as they participated in the Centennial League #1 event, hosted by Smoky Hill at Springhill Executive Golf Course in Aurora.

In team play, Cherry Creek took top honors, besting Mullen and Grandview. Cherokee Trail took fifth and Eaglecrest took sixth.

In individual play, Bruins’ sophomore Tatum Platt led all competitors with a 6-over 70. Creek junior Caitlyn Chin was second at 3 strokes behind, and another Cherry Creek sophomore, Clara Jeon, finished with a 74. Grandview senior Carolyn Ryan was fourth at 75.
