Esports: Grandview wins another state championship
The Grandview Esports team known as the Super Smash Wolves defeated Mountain Vista 3 sets to 1 set in the state final of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Championship last Thursday at Localhost Esports Arena in Lakewood. 64 teams from across the state competed.
To get to the championship round, the Smash Wolves had to dig themselves out of a hole in the semifinal round, where they were down 0-2 sets against Rocky Mountain.
“Holy smokes, that was the hardest tourney,” Wolves Head Coach Carlos Nevares said. “We were emotionally exhausted afterward, because there were a couple of times when we were about to be out, while advancing to the final against Mountain Vista.”
Sophomores Jonathan Bannoura, RJ Keller and senior Tim Weber took home the second state Esports title for GHS in the last two years. The Grandview League of Legends team won the state title for that discipline in the 22-23 school year.
“We are keeping a good run going here at Grandview,” Nevares said. “There’s a bit of uncertainty. High school kids move on, and there are new kids coming in. You don’t know what games will ebb and flow in popularity at any given time, but we’ve managed to keep a good streak of high-level play and winning.”
Congratulations to the Wolves!
