Gregory WhiteDistrict Athletics: Fall sports off to an exciting start

Student athletes across the district have practiced and scrimmaged in the past few weeks, and now play has begun.

Tourneys in Boys Golf began early last week. Centennial Meet #1 took place on Aug. 15 at Meadow Hills Golf Course in Aurora. Cherry Creek took home team honors, besting Cherokee Trail and Grandview, while Eaglecrest junior Gregory White was the day’s individual champion, posting a 3-under 67, besting Cherry Creek seniors Wyatt Isgrig (68), Henry Starr (69) and Andre Dumonteil (71). Cherokee Trail senior Christopher O’Donnell also came in at 71, with Grandview senior Michael Rosman and Smoky Hill sophomore Reece Nuwash tying for sixth at 72 each.

Girls flag football: GHS vs RegisOn Aug. 17, Grandview hosted Regis Jesuit for the district’s inaugural, fully-sanctioned flag football game. In the late summer heat (temperatures were in the mid-nineties) at Legacy Stadium, the Wolves fell to the Raiders in a close, tough contest. The final score was 6-0. Despite the outcome, the Saturday afternoon crowd was enthusiastic, and the effort on the field was all-out from start to finish. A great start for the district in the growing sport of girls flag football.

On the diamond, the Smoky Hill softball team, led by first-year head coach In Kim, played its season opener against visiting Prairie View. The Thunderhawks took a 10-0 lead over the Buffs after two innings. Smoky got on the board in the home half of the 2nd, crossing the plate three times, and the comeback was on. Timely hitting and aggressive base running by the Buffs saw them score eight runs in Girls softball: Prairie View @ SHHSthe 4th inning, five in the 5th, and another two in the 6th to win a wild one, 18-13.

The other district contest on Saturday saw Overland win its home-opener over Doherty. Final score 16-6 in six innings. The Blazers tallied runs in five of the six frames in the win.

Regular season schedules in boys tennis, cross country, field hockey, boys soccer and girls volleyball begin the week of Aug. 19.
