CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of Aug. 19, 2024
Fall Athletics: District schedules for all fall sports begin
Cherry Creek Schools’ student athletes began contests and meets in several fall sports during the week of Aug. 19, with events in football and gymnastics starting the week of Aug. 26.
In cross country, Cheyenne Mountain High School hosted schools for the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede on Aug. 23 at Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. The venue will host the State Championships in November. Cherry Creek and Smoky Hill participated.
Cherry Creek junior Emily Cohen finished fourth overall in the Championship Girls 5000 Meter Run, with Bruins’ sophomore Hu Kylee finishing eighth. The Bruins finished an impressive second overall in team standings to first-place Heritage.
In the Large School Girls Varsity division, Smoky Hill junior Ella Nichelson finished 62nd.
On the boys’ side, Creek senior Isaac Scott finished 18th and senior Alexander Gilbert was 25th in the Championship Boys 5000. Cherry Creek took fifth overall in the team standings. Valor Christian took the boys team championship.
In the Large School Boys Varsity division, Smoky junior Gabriel Lee took 29th overall.
Boys golf saw Varsity Centennial League Meet #2 take place last Monday at South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial. Again, Eaglecrest junior Gregory White was the day’s individual champion for the second week in a row posting a 4-under 66. Cherokee Trail junior Brayden Forte was second with a 68, Cherry Creek senior Henry Starr third (69). Grandview senior Michael Rosman and CT senior Christopher O’Donnel tied for fourth, both coming into the clubhouse with 71’s.
In the team standings, it was the Cougar foursome of Forte, O’Donnell, junior Dalton Sisneros and sophomore Anthony Chen taking first place with a 287. Cherry was second with a 297. Grandview finished third with a score of 302.
Varsity Centennial Meet #3 will take place on Aug. 27 at Foothills Golf Course in Denver.
Football will begin later this week, starting with the Wagon Wheel game, featuring Overland vs. Smoky Hill, on Thursday, Aug. 29. Denver Public Schools veteran coach Tony Lindsay, Sr. gets his first start for Overland. Lindsay brings more than 30 years of experience to the post.
In other games, Cherokee Trail will host Pine Creek, also on Thursday. Eaglecrest will open on the road on Friday, Aug. 30 against A-Town rival Rangeview. Also on Friday, Grandview will be at home as Legend comes calling. 2023 State finalist Cherry Creek will be in Utah playing Skyridge High School under the lights, also on Friday.
