CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of Sept. 30, 2024
5A Boys Golf: District players and teams qualify for state
Cherry Creek Schools qualified individuals and teams for the 5A State Championships on Oct. 7-8 during regional play last week.
On Oct. 1, Cherokee Trail took home the Northern Regional team championship at the Broadlands in Broomfield. The Cougar threesome of senior Christopher O’Donnell, and juniors Dalton Cisneros and Brayden Forte, combined for a total score of 211, three strokes better than second place Valor Christian. Individually, O’Donnell and Sisneros tied for second place at 69, and Forte (73) took sixth. Sophomore Anthony Chen was 21st, coming in with a 79.
On Sept. 30, at Indian Tree Golf Club in Arvada, Grandview and Smoky Hill competed in Western Region play. The Wolves tied for second overall in the team standings, 10 strokes behind first-place Chatfield. Smoky finished fourth overall. Grandview senior Michael Rosman shot a 71 to place second overall in the individual standings. Smoky sophomore Reece Nuwash tied for fourth with a 73. Wolves’ freshman Sam Silver (77) tied for 13th, and senior Andrew Sinar (78) tied with five others coming in 17th, which included Buffs’ senior Conner Daniel, who also shot a 77 for the day.
Last Wednesday, Cherry Creek took second overall in the team standings at the Southern Regional held at Columbine Country Club in Littleton. Fairview took home the team title by 11 strokes. Individually, Bruins’ seniors Henry Starr and Wyatt Isgrig each tied for 5th place with scores of 74. Seniors Dalton Schwartz (78) and Andre Dumonteil (78) tied for 11th.
Finally, Eaglecrest was part of Central Region play at South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial. The Raptors came in 9th in the overall team competition, with junior Gregory White tying for 7th in the individual standings with a 73.
Players and teams that qualified will compete in the 5A State Championship on Oct. 7-8 at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora.

5A Boys State Team Tennis: Cherry Creek advances to State Semifinals
The Cherry Creek High School boys tennis team got first and second round wins this past week to put the group in position for state title contention.
The No. 2 Bruins shut out No. 15 Columbine 7-0 on Oct. 2, and then dispatched No. 10 Arapahoe 6-1 last Saturday. Creek will host No. 3 Valor Christian in semifinal play on Oct. 15.
Grandview, seeded 8th, defeated No. 9 Fort Collins 5-2 last Wednesday in first round play, but fell to No. 1 Regis Jesuit, 7-0, on Oct. 5.
The 5A State Team Tennis Championships will take place on Oct. 22 at Denver Tennis Park.
5A Girls Volleyball: Regular season winding down
District girls volleyball teams are entering the final stages of the regular season. Last week, Centennial League matches across the district continued.
Cherokee Trail (6-0 in the Centennial, 11-2 overall) won their game against Arapahoe 3-0. Next, a showdown at second place Cherry Creek on Oct 9.
The Bruins (6-0, 10-4 overall) got wins at home against Smoky Hill and on the road at Arapahoe. Up next, the aforementioned showdown at home against CT.
Grandview (4-2, 6-9 overall) got a win last Tuesday at home against Overland. The Wolves will next be on the road at Eaglecrest on Tuesday night.
The Raptors (2-3, 7-7 overall) got a 3-1 win over Mullen at The Nest last week. EHS will next host Smoky Hill on Oct. 7.
The Buffs (1-4, 5-13) were 0-1 this past week. Smoky is on the road at Eaglecrest on Monday night.
Overland (0-6, 5-12) was 0-2 for the week. The Blazers will finish their season hosting Arapahoe on Oct. 8.
5A Football: District teams go 3-3 in Week 6
CCSD football teams began Centennial League play last weekend. Cherry Creek High School got a 45-0 shutout over Cherokee Trail on Oct. 5 at Legacy Stadium. The game capped off the 14th annual CCSD Veterans & Military Appreciation event. The Bruins (5-1 overall, 1-0 in the Centennial) will host Arapahoe (4-2, 1-0) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the Stutler Bowl. Cherokee Trail (2-4, 0-1) will be back at Legacy Stadium to play Eaglecrest at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11.
Also on Saturday, Eaglecrest defeated Smoky Hill 54-14 at the Stutler Bowl. The Raptors improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Next, the Raptors will take on CTHS Friday afternoon at Legacy. The Buffaloes (0-6, 0-1) will host Grandview at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Legacy.
On Oct. 4, Grandview hosted Arapahoe at Legacy Stadium. The Wolves fell to the Warriors in a close, tough contest. The final score was 25-13. GHS (2-4, 0-1) will play Smoky Hill on Oct. 10 at Legacy Stadium.
Overland had its first league game in the 5A Metro North last Friday at the Stutler Bowl. The Blazers notched their second win of the year, defeating Mountain Range 34-7. OHS (2-4, 1-0) will be on the road to play Westminster at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11.
