CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of Oct. 7, 2024
5A Boys State Golf: Cherry Creek takes home a championship
The Cherry Creek High School boys golf team took home their first state title in 43 years on Oct. 8. Conditions were warm and dry at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora as the Bruins edged out district rival Cherokee Trail by three strokes for the team championship. Fossil Ridge and Valor Christian tied for third.
Seniors Henry Starr, Wyatt Isgrig, Dalton Schwartz, and Andre Dumonteil closed out their high school careers on a high note, turning in a two-day winning total of 423.
“I’m happy for our players,” said Bruins Head Coach Dustin Neel. “They put in the work and I emphasized to them to focus on the process, and we’d get the result, and we did.”
Coach Neel said the game of golf is not just physical play.
“These guys have become mentally tough over the last four years,” he said. “It wasn’t something that just happened. I knew this group was special going into this season and I felt like we could get it done. It feels great to have the mission accomplished.”
Cherokee Trail first year Head Coach Ryan Stevens was pleased with his charges’ runners-up finish. His team of juniors Dalton Sisneros, Brayden Forte, senior Christopher O’Donnell, and sophomore Anthony Chen combined for a two-day total of 426, just three strokes behind the Bruins.
“It was quite a wild ride,” Coach Stevens said. “I was gifted some incredible players and staff. I was proud of the kids. They battled. I know we didn’t have our best couple of starting holes yesterday (Round 1 on Oct. 7), but five holes in, they kind of turned it on, and the rest is history. I’m proud of them. It’s always nice when you can add to the trophy case.”
In individual play, Grandview senior Michael Rosman was state runner-up to Castle View’s Gavin Amella by just one stroke.
“Feels like I could have done a little bit better,” said a reserved Rosman. “I had a good round today, but just a few (missed) shots yesterday, and a couple (missed) shots today, and it could have been a good week. I started out pretty slow on the front nine – I missed so many putts. I was determined to switch things around, and I still hung in there, but that’s golf,” he said.
Cherokee Trail junior Dalton Sisneros tied for third.
Congratulations to all the CCSD players on a great tournament!
5A Softball: Cherokee Trail wins Centennial League
The Cherokee Trail High School softball team won the Centennial League Challenge last Wednesday, with a 6-3 home win over Grandview. The Cougars were down 3-0 to the Wolves in the fifth inning, but rallied to tie the contest with three in the home half, highlighted by sophomore Sydney Cobb’s 2-run base hit. Cobb then hit a 3-run homer in the sixth to total five RBIs on the day.
“I didn’t realize I had five runs-batted-in,” said Cobb. “I just try to hit people in, meet the ball, and make sure the runs get scored.”
The Cougars improved to 19-3 after the victory, and have won the Centennial League for the second straight year.
“Two in a row,” said Cougars Head Coach Caley Mitchell. “We’re excited. We wanted to win. Grandview is a good team, and we knew we’d have to play really well, and it’s fun to put a banner up in the gym.”
CT then went to Broomfield on Thursday for a showdown with the undefeated Eagles. Despite a great pitching performance by Cobb, the Cougars fell 1-0 to BHS to finish the season at 19-4.
State Regional play will take place Oct. 18 and 19, at various sites across the state. Cherokee Trail is the No. 1 seed and will host, while Grandview (9), Eaglecrest (15) and Cherry Creek (23) will all be on the road.
