Building Forward: Village East to receive new kitchen, expanded cafeteria and updated facade

Village East Elementary School.Renovations to Village East Elementary worth approximately $5.5 million will begin in earnest within the next few weeks.

Thanks to bond funds approved by Cherry Creek School District voters in 2020, Village East will receive improvements to its exterior walls, as well as expansions to its existing cafeteria. The construction work is set to begin on June 1 and is expected to last into 2022.

According to district construction manager Mike Lovick, the renovations will repair existing stucco exterior walls with thin brick masonry and metal wall panels. What’s more, the cafeteria remodel will add capacity and a brand new kitchen to the building, which was originally constructed in 1971.

“It’s a two-phased project. We can’t get it all done in one summer,” he said. “We’re going to complete one phase this summer, and one phase next summer.”

Architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht Inc. and contractor GE Johnson will complete the work, which will help modernize the building and better serve the enrollment anticipated for the coming years, Lovick said.

“The existing cafeteria is too small for the current and future enrollment at Village East,” Lovick said. “Thanks to the generosity of our voters, these improvements will help give the students the room they need to properly learn, grow and thrive.”
