Principal's Update 10/08/2021
As we look toward the final week of the first quarter, I am excited to share some reflections, updates, and future plans. We started this school year with goals related to the way we collaborate, and how we plan and deliver meaningful learning experiences for all students. While we have adjusted our pace to ensure that we were identifying and supporting student needs as we returned to full time, in person learning, we have and will continue to focus on instruction and collaboration in our work. A new quarter (and grading period) provides an opportunity to reflect and re-norm, and we have encouraged teachers to revisit and re-establish classroom expectations as students return from Fall Break. Please continue to communicate with your student’s teachers if you have any questions. There are so many things to celebrate at Horizon Community Middle School, and we know that our partnership with our families has been instrumental this quarter. Thank you all!
Below are some additional updates and reminders. Have a great weekend!

Veterans Day Celebration
We will be hosting a celebration event for active-duty members of the military and veterans on November 8th. Please complete this Active-Duty & Veteran Survey if you or an extended family member would like to be recognized.
Masks in School
Masks continue to be required in school. Please engage in a conversation with your student about the importance of wearing their mask properly throughout the entire day. In an effort to conserve our mask supply and keep our campus clean, we encourage students to bring their own mask to school each day. We will continue to provide disposable masks to students who need one on a daily basis.
Concerning Student Behavior
Please see the message below sent from the Cherry Creek School District last week. Families – we need your partnership and support to prevent students from making serious mistakes related to TikTok challenges:
It has come to our attention that additional TikTok and social media-related challenges are circulating among middle and high school students locally and around the country. These challenges urge students to engage in problematic and illegal behavior such as slapping a teacher.
Our goal is to communicate with parents and guardians about these concerning TikTok challenges before they become a problem in our schools. Your help and partnership over the last several weeks in talking to students about the TikTok challenge that encouraged vandalism in school bathrooms resulted in a significant decrease in the behavior. Thank you!
We encourage you to have conversations with your students about making smart choices when faced with a TikTok or social media challenge that encourages them to engage in behavior that harms someone, causes property damage, or puts anyone in danger. We do not always know what the next challenge or “dare” will be, but talking with students about not engaging in destructive behavior in general is impactful.
Please be advised that students who make choices to participate in dangerous or illegal behavior related to TikTok challenges will be held accountable. Student outcomes will include suspension, restitution, law enforcement referral, and/or expulsion.
6th Grade CogAT Assessment
On Monday, October 11th, all 6th grade students will participate in the computer based CogAT assessment. An alternate schedule for 6th graders will be designed for the day. Please ensure that students come to school with their fully charged computer. Please contact Megan Zitek, Assistant Principal, at email@example.com with questions, and please see the attached letter for additional information.
Parent Volunteer Opportunities
At Horizon Community, we know that a strong partnership with parents and families is essential as we work together to support all students. Some ways that parents can proactively engage in school are as follows:
Parent-Teacher Community Organization (PTCO)
Click to HERE learn more about our PTCO purpose and meeting dates. Our next meeting is on Monday, October 11th at 6:00pm. We will meet in-person in the Design Studio at Horizon Community. Here is a LINK to attend virtually.
Partnership for Academically Successful Students (PASS)
Click HERE to learn more about our PASS work. We plan to host both in-person and virtual meeting options in the future. PASS meetings typically occur in the evening.
In our Accountability Committee meetings, we will share important information about Horizon Community, including details related to our Unified Improvement Plan. This may include analysis of data and examination of our school goals. Accountability Committee meetings will occur virtually during the school day.
If you are interested in participating in any of the above parent groups, please contact Dr. Brad Weinhold at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Husky Community Market
The Husky Community Market is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you need to shop at any other time, call 720.886.6103 to make arrangements to stop by.
The Market is available for anyone wanting some groceries and/or other dry goods at absolutely no charge. No sign-up is necessary.
